Composer’s Notes

Eternal Word is a setting of selected passages from the Psalms that comes from my own search for encouragement and wisdom in Scripture. These passages follow a progression in thought:

  • We acknowledge God as the Almighty Creator, whose word and being will last forever.
  • We realise our sin and confess it.
  • We seek God’s laws and his ways.
  • We thank him for his compassion, provision, protection and faithfulness.
  • We long to dwell with him forever.

The songs are interconnected with appropriate readings. All songs lyrics and readings are taken with permission from the NIV.

An Endorsement from David Garratt (Scripture In Song)

“When Matthew first talked to me about the fact that he was creating a cantata from some of the Psalms, I was delighted. It made me think back to 1968 when Dale and I first recorded songs from the word of God to teach people God’s ways and encourage worship.

“There is nothing quite like ‘feeding on God’s word’ with song, because song adds enormously to our remembering. A song is recalled in a way a spoken word rarely is. I am therefore delighted to endorse this cantata Eternal Word and pray that the Spirit of God will use it to teach and encourage many.”

— David Garratt (Scripture In Song)
